Star Wars Visual FX, it’s out of this World!
The guys over at FXGuide do a sterling job of keeping everyone in the loop of what’s going on in the Visual FX industry. They have a great blog, podcasts and interviews with working industry professionals to talk FX. Their latest episode is all about Star Wars! For as long as I can remember, Star Wars has been around. It is one of those series of films that everyone has seen or at least, knows about. These films are cult classics, yet, so massively popular in the mainstream. If we were a school that focussed on Marketing, we would use Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the perfect case study. Luckily we’re a film school, so we focus on the film.
What’s been happening in the Visual FX Industry?
You may well have missed it, but recently there was a new Star Wars film released; The Force Awakens. It was a relatively low key affair but the FX on the film were phenomenal. Here at GetFilming, we’ve already watched it a few more times than we’d like to admit and we’ve been busy playing with adobe after effects to try and figure out how it can be reproduced. We’re still working on that but the below video is a great start in learning how to achieve the Star Wars Visual FX style.
For now though, grab a cup of coffee and settle down to watch FXGuide’s latest episode, all about Star Wars: The Force awakens. The video features John Montgomery, from FXGuide sitting down with Industrial Light + Magic, to discuss their work on the film. There’s episodes with senior visual effects supervisor Roger Guyett, visual effects supervisor Patrick Tubach, animation supervisor Paul Kavanagh, environments supervisor Susumu Yukihiro, compositing supervisor Jay Cooper and asset build supervisor Dave Fogler.
